Staying Ahead in Real Estate: Navigating Continuing Education Requirements

In the dynamic world of real estate, it's essential for professionals to stay updated and compliant with continuing education (CE) requirements. Whether you're a Broker, Managing Broker, or Residential Leasing Agent, understanding the specific CE requirements for your role is crucial to maintaining your license and staying ahead in the industry. In the following sections, we delve into the CE requirements for each role in Illinois, equipping you with the knowledge you need to renew your license on time and without any hiccups.

For Brokers:

  • Renew every two years by April 30 (in even years).

  • Complete 12 credit hours of core and elective CE, including:

    • 4-Hour Core

    • 8-Hour Elective, including Sexual Harassment Prevention training.

  • Exceptions:

    • First-time renewals require Post-License Education instead of CE.

    • Active Illinois Attorneys are exempt from completing CE but must renew their license with IDFPR.

For Managing Brokers:

Illinois Managing Broker CE Requirements:

  • Complete 24 required hours, including all five courses:

    • Broker Management CE (12 hours)

    • 4-Hour Core CE (4 hours)

    • Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (1 hour)

    • Elective: Ethical Practice (3 hours)

    • Elective: Property Management Essentials (4 hours).

  • Note: The Broker Management CE course is required for all Managing Broker licenses, regardless of the role (Sponsoring or Designated Managing Broker).

For Residential Leasing Agents:

Residential Leasing Agent Continuing Education Requirements:

  • Renew every two years by July 31 (in even years).

  • Complete the 8-hour Residential Leasing Agent CORE course, including 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention training.

  • Exception: First-time renewals for Residential Leasing Agents (licensed on or after May 1, 2022) are exempt from Leasing Agent CE.

Additional Information:

  • Brokers and Managing Brokers must complete their entire CE requirement before renewing their licenses.

  • For a complete course description or if you have already completed your 12-credit-hour core and elective requirement, refer to the specific course details and contact the relevant authorities for further guidance.
